San Diego State University has three major construction projects in the works, with plands for a deluge of student housing on the horizon.

The newest addition to the campus is the $11 million Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center.

The alumni center is being constructed on 55th Street, between the Athletics Center and Sports Deck, at the former site of the Football Operations Center, which was demolished in April.

General contractor The Augustine Company is constructing the facility, SDSU spokeswoman Gina Jacobs said.

The two-story, 30,000-square-foot building is expected to be complete prior to the start of the fall 2009 semester.

The building will feature 20,000 square feet of meeting space, a great hall ballrom with capacity for 260 people, and a library with Aztec memorabilia.

The alumni center's entrance is through a rotunda comprising a series of archways with green architectural accents, including exposed reinforcement bars.

The names of SDSU Alumni Association and Student Scholarship Fund donors will be etched on the titles of the rotunda floor.

Also ongoing is the expansion of the Aztec Center on Aztec Center Drive off College Avenue. The $51 million project will add 65,000 square feet to the existing facility and rename the student union "Modern Space."

The addition includes meeting space, a theater, pub, retail space and expaned offices for student organizations.

The building will also feature a study lounge open 24 hours, seven days a week. In accordance with the university's sustainability's efforts, the design targets a LEED Silver standard for energy efficiency. Sutdents approvied the project by a vote last spring.

Construction is slated to bein in fall of 2009 and be complete by fall 2011. Sundt Construction is the project's general contractor.

Currently in the planning phases is a $55 million renovation of Storm Hall and Nasitir Hall. The project will add 22,000 square feet of office and classrooom space and be constructed to LEED Silver efficiency standards cy CW Driver Builders.

Construction is scheduled to begin next fall on the publicly funded project, but may be delayed due to the state's budget crisis.

The Pooled Money Investment Board recently suspended all construction projects due to the state legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger's failure to agree on a budget. Until a budget is passed, the future of San Diego State's renovation of the two halls is uncertain.

Although the university has no definitive plans in the works, the master plan involves the addition of on-campus housing for 3,000 students over the next 10 years, Jacobs said.

The most likely location for new student housing is on university-owned property along College Avenue.
